The Wedding Planner Movie

During the last few years many movies about brides, weddings and wedding planners have been made. Some of them have even become famous because of their plot, action or actors and as examples we have the movies “Bride Wars”, ”Bridget Jones’s Diary”, ”I Do(But I Don’t),”The wedding planner”. The latter movie will be the topic of this article and I will try to talk about the cast , the plot and how is the wedding planning activity represented here.

“The wedding planner”(2001) is a romantic comedy starring  Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey in leading roles. Jennifer Lopez plays the role of a wedding planner from San Francisco – Mary Fiore who is to caught in planning others events than taking care of her own personal life. All these until she is saved from an accident by Dr. Steve Edison (played by Matthew McConaughey). They end up spending a beautiful evening in the park watching an old movie ,dancing an almost kissing until they are interrupted by the rain.

After this unusual event, Mary starts to consider the possibility of falling in love, but these hopes are destroyed by the news that Steve is engaged to her biggest client Fran Donolly(played by Bridgette Wilson). Finally she agrees to plan their wedding and when shopping for flowers with Steve she runs intro her ex-fiance  and his pregnant wife. Later that night Mary gets drunk and starts obsessing over her fiancé leaving her for his high school girlfriend with whom he is now married.

Steve tries to comfort here and in these moments of vulnerability, he admits he has feeling for her, but Mary refuses to act on her feelings because she respects her client too much. After this episode, Mary is reunited with a childhood friend, Massimo (Justin Chambers) who proposes to her. She accepts but during her wedding, Steve returns and askes her to dance in  the park where they first met and fell in love.

The movie wasn’t well received by the critics due to the fact that it is “heavy-handed and contrived in its execution” and “unoriginal”.

The story of the wedding planner is simple and can be resumed here to the saying :”Always a bridesmaid, never a bride”. Although here, Mary is not a bridesmaid, but a wedding planner the situation is similar because she is not happy with her love life. She is engaged twice, but these engagements never materialize so she continues organizing happy  weddings for other brides. The meaning of her actions can be understood as a manner to express disappointment of her  life. Mary tries to fill  the void of her life by giving what she needs to other women and making their wedding day perfect.

In conclusion, I want to say that “The wedding planner” is a story which proves that being a wedding planner must be a wonderful job because it gives you the possibility of offering many couples unforgettable memories, but also you have to focus on your own personal life and try to learn as much as you can from other people’s happiness and especially from other people’s mistakes.
