Planning An Amish Wedding

In all cultures  weddings are seen as important events in people’s lives because they symbolize commitment to the one that you love, for life. For the Amish people this also represents a very important event, but the planning and the evolution of the whole wedding is rather different than in other cultures.

It is important to now that the Amish people are encountered especially in the Northeastern part of the United States (Pennsylvania, Ohio) and are rather famous for their simple lifestyle. Their strong bond and isolated communities remind us of the early Puritans, who also had an enormous faith in God and believed that hard work is the key to success.

Planning an Amish wedding has to begin with the membership issue. In order to get married in an Amish community you have to be a member of the Amish church, because all the community gets involved in planning the happy event. In general Amish weddings are not very complicated, they are not fastuous but rather simple according to their lifestyle. After this, a date must be decided. Usually weddings are planned for the month of November or the beginning of December ( on Tuesdays or Thursdays)  after the crop is harvest the cold is still bearable.

Furthermore, the problem of the clothes is being taken care of. The brides sew their own dresses or they are being helped by their mothers. These wedding dresses are usually simple in dark colors like blue or purple and they have a practical purpose: they can also be worn after the wedding on certain elegant  events. The groom’s outfit is also simple and is made out of a dark suit, a white shirt and a tie.

The wedding ceremony is held in the bride’s family  home. All members of the family work hard to receive their guests and are helped by who ever wants to contribute(from the Amish community). Next, the wedding ritual is similar to the Christian one, except for the rings exchange, since Amish don’t wear any jewelry. After the ceremony the feast begins. This is made up of  roast chicken, mashed potatoes, pie, cookies etc., all homemade or brought by the guests. After this great feast, they usually play games or sing and they give the happy couple some simple  wedding gifts such as  farm tools or canned food. The Amish bride changes her black bonnet for a white cap which symbolizes her social status. Later on, they serve a second meal and they sing hymns or read from the scripture.

This unordinary wedding is not followed by a honeymoon, but by a usual day where the newlywed do their daily chores and clean the remains of  the wedding feast.

As we can see there are many ways of planning a wedding and celebrating joy. Although planning an Amish wedding may seem bizarre to some of us, for the Amish people this is a normal ,joyful and important event. I must admit that at first, I found their celebrations awfully dull, but while I continued reading  I realized that the are happy with what they have and if they love each other nothing else really matters .
