Messianic Wedding Planning

Maybe you ask yourself what is a messianic wedding or maybe you already know. I don’t know about you but I am interested in learning about cultural weddings. I think the best way to study about other people’s cultures is to observe the customs and traditions of their weddings. In many cultures wedding is the most important event in anyone’s life and you can see years of traditions, rituals that survived from generation to generation. If you take away their rituals and traditions you take away their identity as an ethnic group that is what defines them.

So I am curious to learn about messianic wedding, there are a lot of websites to search from but the best way is to actually participate at a messianic wedding. Or you can read about it and be prepared before you have the opportunity to see such a wedding. A Jewish is presented as a beautiful picture of the bride and the groom joined under the covering of a chuppah that represents the covering that is under the ‘’ shadow of His Wings’’.

The sermon is performed by a rabbi. Marriage is a picture of God’s desire to unite in fellowship with the mankind as the bridegroom Messiah longs to be with His Bride which represents the city of Jerusalem. Marriage is accomplished by three unions. Then the bride walks around the groom seven times, she symbolizes the seven matriarchs of the faith. They move under the chuppah and the groom reads the Ketubah and exchange vows and rings and the announcement of husband and wife is made by the rabbi. At the end you will see glass breaking at a Jewish wedding that is a reminder of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Another important element in messianic wedding includes ketuba (marriage contract) signed by two witnesses, a wedding canopy, a ring owned by the groom that is given to the bride. The Jewish wedding has two stages kiddushin betrothal in Hebrew and nissuin marriage called huppa. The wedding is full of meaningful rituals, symbolizing the obligations of husband and wife. Both of them fast from down until the completion of the marriage ceremony and it is customary for the bride and the groom not to see each other one week preceding the wedding. Next comes the badeken, the veiling of the bride and the ceremony takes place under the chuppah a symbol of the home that the new couple will build together.

The reading of the ketubah (marriage contract) is in the original Aramaic text and outlines the groom’s responsibilities to provide the wife with food, shelter and clothing, the document has the standing of a legally binding agreement. There are a lot of other customs that I didn’t mention but I let you discover them. Mazel Tov!
